Press Release #1 Flyingdoc, Inc.
Flyingdoc Inc. had its very first Fundraiser
on Sunday October 10th 2004 at Desert Palms Hotel
and Suites.
The Event was well attended by people from all
walks of life, including, Business Leaders, Physicians
and Families. The Organization has declared its
Event a Thundering Success!
The event was a re-visit of Flyingdocs' record
of the past five years presented in an Audio-Video
Format, with LIVE Audio from Trauma Surgeon Dr.
Mustaq Qureshi from Base Station 2 (Pardi Hospital,
Pardi-Valsad, India). His feedback was very valuable
in the understanding of Trauma Injuries on N.H.
8, which runs from Mumbai to Delhi, and which
has undergone massive renovation, leading to totally
different mechanisms of injuries seen now from
vehicular accidents.
Dr. Tushar K. Desai, Executive Director of the
Non-Profit Organization, gave the audience a brief
introduction on the Goals and Visions of Flyingdoc
Inc. This was followed by the Organization's founder
and Medical Director, Dr. Abhi Desai MD FACEP,
an Emergency Physician associated with Kaiser
Permanente Medical Center and an Asst. Clinical
Professor at the University of California, Irvine.
Dr. Desai presented the birth of Flyingdoc Inc.
in 2000, it's involvement in the Bhuj Earthquake,
and subsequent set-up of Base Stations in Jhagadia,
located between Ankleshwar and Bharuch, near NH
8. He also described Flyingdoc's involvement in
re-enforcing Kasturba Hospital that caters to
the tribal belt extensively, and updating it with
Ventilators, Cardiac Monitors and Defibrillators,
along with extensive supplies of Medical, Surgical
and Ob-Gyn Equipments for the past 4 years. Dr
Abhi Desai shared with the audience extensive
information of types of patients seen at both
Base Stations, the need to re-enforce both Stations
in the coming years, the impact of the work done
in the past five years, and finally, the vision
of the future. He emphasized that physicians and
paramedics, along with nurses, who visit the Base
Stations, are not just involved in didactic lectures,
but also in a hands-on approach on an hour-to-hour
schedule, that both Base Stations, set up prior
to visits in February/March of every year. These
are highly qualified doctors, who take their own
time and fly at their expenses, carrying loads
of medical equipment, which last year alone amounted
to over $200,000.
This presentation was followed by the Director
of Logistics and Operations, Kamal Desai of Cerritos,
who runs the procurement of medical equipment
from various hospitals in the Los Angeles area,
the storage of that equipment at A1 Storage in
Fullerton (a FlyingDoc sponsor for nearly a year).
He described how every individual piece of equipment
is tagged, calibrated, itemised and securely transported
to India. In India, the logistics are even more
difficult, so he leaves one week in advance of
the Flyingdoctors Teams along with Dr Abhi Desai,
to make arrangements for lodging, boarding and
travel of the Team members as well as the equipment.
His tasks involve constant and continuous communication
with co-coordinators of BOTH Base Stations, to
assure a smooth transfer.
The Fundraiser concluded with a stunned audience
querying the staff of "How can I help and be involved?"
The Executive Board Members were well served
by Mrs. Rashmi Desai, Treasurer and Mrs. Shruti
K. Desai, Secretary, who had been the silent workforce
in arranging the Event, along with Dr Surekha
Vashi MD from Glendale Adventist Hospital and
Medical Center, in Los Angeles.
